Modern kitchens are sleek, clean, and contemporary, but most of all they are functional. When creating a modern look, the first thing to do is get rid of clutter. When not in use, counter tops should be almost empty, contributing to the 'lean' look. Provide ample storage in cabinets and pantries, and avoid leaving appliances, such as blenders, mixers and can openers, in plain view. While you may want them handy for easy use, tucking them away is a better choice than leaving them on the counter. Stainless steel sinks are a good choice for modern kitchens. Kitchen taps should be of chrome or brushed nickel, and should be of clean lines, nothing ornate or frilly. A tall pot-filler faucet is both elegant and functional, and does well paired with either one mixer handle, or two standard handles. A matching sprayer and soap dispenser continues the efficient, yet attractive, look.

Major appliances such as the refrigerator, dishwasher, and stove, are usually purchased with matching finishes. Again, stainless steel is a perfect choice for modern kitchens, although black is also very popular. Stainless is easy to clean and maintain, and yet beautiful. It lends a professional flair to the home kitchen. If purchasing all new appliances is not in your budget, and your appliances are still in good condition, check with the manufacturer to see if face plates are available for your present model. This can be a very inexpensive way to update your kitchen. As far as color is concerned, less is more. Monochromatic color schemes are very chic, and a great look for modern kitchens. Pale hues of white, oyster, or blue lend themselves to a sophisticated look, and go well with the stainless steel fixtures. If black is your choice for appliances, you can also choose black cabinets and/or cabinet tops. A single splash of color is very striking in either one of these color schemes. Cobalt blue canisters in a sleek, white kitchen, or a black and white kitchen, will really pop.

So does a wall of red cabinets, or a green glass bowl of fruit. As far as cabinets are concerned, re-facing is a good option to obtain the clean lines you need in a modern kitchen, and kinder on the budget than all-new cabinets. Pale woods such as maple, or laminates in black or white, are good choices here. Granite, or one of the synthetics, would be a great choice for countertops in modern kitchens. They are very practical, easy to clean, non-staining, and long-wearing. They come in a multitude of colors from deep black to rich greens to pale blues, and can go with whichever color scheme you choose. Hardwood floors, or one of the many excellent wood laminates, are wonderful in modern kitchens. There are also ceramic tiles in an abundance of shapes and colors, and synthetic tiles which have shock absorbing qualities for the cook who spends hours on his/her feet preparing gourmet meals.
